POSITION AND PURPOSE


 

The Host Systems Engineer I provides day‑to‑day administration and operational support for enterprise host systems, assisting with platforms such as IBM Power and HPE NonStop under the guidance of Host Systems Engineer II. This role supports mission‑critical infrastructure by performing routine system maintenance, monitoring performance and availability, responding to incidents, and assisting with platform updates and project activities. The Engineer I works closely with Host Systems Engineers II and cross‑functional IT teams to learn enterprise system operations, follow established procedures, and support stable, secure, and compliant environments while developing deeper technical skills.

THE WORK


 

Assist with the administration and day to day operational support of Guardian operating systems on HPE NonStop platforms under the guidance of Host Systems Engineer II

 

Assist with administration and maintenance of AIX operating systems on IBM Power Systems, including basic system checks, monitoring, and routine operational tasks.

 

Support InterSystems Caché and IRIS environments by performing basic operational tasks, monitoring system status, and escalating issues as needed.

 

Respond to system alerts and incidents by performing initial troubleshooting and following documented procedures; escalate complex issues to senior staff when required.

 

Monitor system performance, availability, and security events using established monitoring tools.

 

Participate in scheduled maintenance activities, including patching and updates, following documented change procedures.

 

Log, track, update, and resolve service requests and incidents using the enterprise ticketing system in accordance with SLA expectations.

 

Follow established system configurations, standards, and architectural guidelines; assist with documentation updates as directed.

 

Contribute to the creation and maintenance of technical documentation, runbooks, and procedures for operational tasks.

 

Assist with infrastructure projects and initiatives by performing assigned tasks, testing, documentation, and validation activities.

 

Coordinate with internal teams and vendors as directed to support day to day operations and project activities.

 

Maintain awareness of regulatory and compliance requirements relevant to system operations at a foundational level.

 

Participate in an on call rotation with guidance and support from senior engineering staff.

 

Perform other job related duties as assigned.

 

Develop and maintain an understanding of the pertinent regulatory requirements and risks inherent to job responsibilities, establish, and maintain control activities that mitigate those risks consistent with the Credit Union’s risk appetite, and ensure operational integrity and compliance with applicable regulations.


QUALIFICATIONS


 


EDUCATION:

Bachelor’s Degree in computer science, Information Technology, Management Information Systems, OR equivalent combination of education, certifications, and relevant hands-on experience. preferred


EXPERIENCE:

5+ years supporting enterprise server environments in systems administration, infrastructure operations, or related IT roles. preferred

Exposure to enterprise platforms such as IBM Power or HPE NonStop systems is preferred but not required.

Experience working with UNIX/Linux operating systems; familiarity with AIX or Guardian OS is a plus.

Exposure to or general familiarity with InterSystems Cache or IRIS databases is desirable.

Foundational understanding of backup, recovery, monitoring, and availability concepts in enterprise or production environments.

Experience using ticketing and incident management systems to support infrastructure operations and service requests.

Basic understanding of system security principles, access controls, and operational best practices in regulated environments.

Ability to troubleshoot and resolve common infrastructure issues by following documented procedures and escalating complex problems as appropriate.

Demonstrated willingness and ability to learn new platforms, tools, and processes in a mission‑critical, high‑availability environment.

Effective written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to collaborate with engineering teams, operations staff, and business stakeholders.


KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS:

Possession of a valid California Driver’s License is required.

Relevant certifications are a plus but not required:

• HPE Certified Systems Engineer (CSE)

• Other HPE NonStop certification

• IBM Power Systems / AIX certification

• Linux system administration certification

ORGANIZATIONAL CONTACTS AND RELATIONSHIPS


 

INTERNAL:

Regular interaction with Infrastructure Engineers, Computer Operations, IT Programing, Information Security, Network and Storage teams, and IT Service Management staff to support enterprise systems, respond to incidents, and perform scheduled maintenance activities.

EXTERNAL:

Interaction with approved technology vendors, hardware and software support providers, and service partners, typically in coordination with IT Systems Manager, for troubleshooting, maintenance, and support escalation.


WORKING CONDITIONS


 

Work time includes weekend and after-hours time, based on organizational needs. This position works in-office where working conditions, lighting, temperature, audio, and workspace are all sufficient.


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS


 

Work requires the ability to constantly operate a computer and the ability to read, type, and communicate. Work may require the ability to move work-related supplies weighing up to 10-15 pounds.
